The customer journey is what happens between your departments.
Begin with the customer, not the org chart
The customer journey is the sequence of experiences that takes someone from not knowing you exist to becoming a repeat customer or advocate. It should be mapped from their point of view, not as a tour of your internal departments.
Find the decision points
How do the right customers discover you? What makes them investigate further? What questions or objections appear? What evidence builds confidence? Where do they wait, repeat themselves, or abandon the process?
Those moments are more important than drawing a beautiful arrow between six boxes.
Purchase is not the finish line
A weak handover, unclear onboarding, missed update, or confusing invoice can undo the confidence created during sales. The post-purchase experience is where the promise becomes real.
It is also where reviews, referrals, repeat work, and long-term value are created.
Small businesses can still add value after the sale
A builder who shares completed projects gives past customers reassurance that the business remains active and successful. A consultant who sends a useful follow-up note keeps the relationship alive. Value does not have to mean a loyalty platform and twelve automated emails.
- Map the journey from the customer’s view
- Look for uncertainty, delay, and repetition
- Make the purchase and handover easy
- Design the post-purchase experience too
